Project breakdown

After lower-limb surgery, patients often exceed or under-use their prescribed weight-bearing limits, which risks implant failure and slows recovery. The patient app had to hold a reliable BLE connection to the Smart Crutch Tips and show real-time gait compliance without clinical complexity.

Built the patient iOS app and connectivity SDK between January and September 2021:

  • CoreBluetooth with custom and standard GATT
  • Device pairing with cane and crutches modes
  • Real-time weight-bearing charts with rehab-day progress
  • Packaged as the CBMobility CocoaPod
  • Weight-bearing compliance of 73.6% versus 21.1% in the control group (Brueilly et al., 2024)
  • System Usability Scale score of 84.25, rated excellent
  • 10 out of 10 patient recommendation likelihood
  • FDA-cleared device with 3 active clinical trials
